Platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) is a process that harnesses the body’s natural regenerative properties which are then directed to a specific site. Think for a minute about a simple cut on your skin. Your body responds by directing platelets to the injury to stop bleeding. Shortly thereafter, several growth factors (contained in the plasma) and healing cells rush to the injured tissue to begin the healing process. Capturing those healing, reparative, and regenerative properties is the essence of PRP.
PRP was developed in the 1970s and has been used since the 1990s, primarily in orthopedics, to promote healing in sports-related injuries. Several prominent athletes have sought this technology to accelerate the healing process. As with most procedures in medicine, we have discovered other applications for PRP from dentistry to pain management to cosmetic applications.
The process involves taking a small tube of your own blood which virtually eliminates the risk of allergic reactions or rejection and concentrates the powerful regenerative properties of platelets and plasma. This biologic concentration of nutrient-rich cells and growth factors is then injected into the target area to promote cell growth, collagen production, and improved blood supply. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and discomfort is minimal. Numbing cream is used at the sites where the PRP is injected.
Because we are injecting a concentration of your own serum back into your body the risk of any reaction is minimal. Also, we use one of the 20 kits that are FDA approved for this process and none have reported any serious complications.
The PRP Vampire Facial has been popularized recently by several celebrities. PRP is taken through a standard blood draw into one of our specialized blood tubes. We then process this in our office lab. The PRP is then used during your facial treatment through micro-needling. Micro-needling is a technique of using a device to drive the PRP into the deeper layers of skin. It is minimally uncomfortable, and patients can elect to use a topical anesthetic cream. However, many patients tolerate the procedure without needing anesthesia. The results include glowing, more youthful skin, smaller pores, and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. We recommend a series of 2 to 6 treatments, depending on your goal.
